Serious Goodness for Wanna be Polers! A must-Read for ALL POLERS!
So what is all this hype? Oh..You are so gonna love this one. No matter if you are new to "upside down therapy", an old hand or, a wanna be poler! You NEED this information!!!
Gather 'round, fitness skeptics and well-meaning "just eat less, move more" mantra-repeaters. Science has entered the chat, and it brought receipts.
A longitudinal study out in Poland by researchers Nawrocka, Pawelak, and Mynarski (2024) took 20 complete pole fitness newbies, handed them over to one professional instructor, and had them take exactly one 70-minute class based on a curriculum, once a week, for 20 weeks. The article actually gives the class syllabus breakdown! Sweet! (Click to the article linked at the conclusion!)
That is it. That's all they did!!!
Seventy minutes a week. 70! And BIG changes happened! Super BIG. No daily gym grinds, no surviving on celery water. Just pure, structured pole education. And the physical shifts that happened by week 20 are enough to make traditional gym memberships weep.
1. The Disappearing Act (BMI & Fat Percentage)
Body Mass Index (BMI): Decreased from 22.7 to 16.9. Now, statistically speaking, 16.9 means they got cut, showing that body mass shifted dramatically.
Fat Percentage (FATP): Their body fat percentage was cut clean in half, plummeting from 26.8% to 14.1%.
2. Muscle Gains and the Great Bloat Mystery (results from Impedence scan)
Predicted Muscle Mass (PMM): Muscle mass went up across the board, shifting from 42.3 kg to a maximum of 57 kg.
Fat-Free Mass (FFM): Changed from 44.6 kg up to a range of 45.9–60 kg, meaning everything but the fat increased.
Total Body Water (TBW): Moved from 32.3 L down to 24.6 L. Women of the world, rejoice: these participants survived 20 weeks of life, hormones, and periods, and the scans showed zero bloat. Pole apparently tells water retention to go find someone else to bother.
Interested in where to get an Impedence body scan - give us a ring: we got a great referral for ya!
3. Turning Back the Cellular Clock
The study found that the participants' basal metabolic rate increased (meaning they burned food faster just by existing) and their metabolic age decreased. They quite literally got younger on paper.
Even cooler, their phase angles increased. In science-speak, a phase angle between 5 and 7 degrees means your cell membranes are robust, healthy, and fiercely defending your youth.THis explains so much for so many older polers!!! What is a bad score.... Below 4? Not so much happy there. But...Pole turned these ladies into cellular fortresses.
The Secret Sauce: It’s All About the Curriculum!
Gyms usually see women drop out of fitness programs within 4 to 6 weeks because of sheer boredom or routines that simply aren't built for a woman's body. Yet, in this study, the retention rate was immaculate: all 54 participants who started the course completed it (N=54)!
They dropped two students from the final statistics due to missing data, but a 100% completion rate is practically unheard of in fitness. Why did they stay? Because the studio used a real, structured curriculum.
Pole research long term is sparse, but we have it. We KNOW that polers continue working out before a plateu for 12-18 months from the relative strength lag. Those facts up there about other exercise is WELL documented! Pole wins hands donw! More on that in another blog!
The curriculum/ an actual how to learn PLAN!! They didn’t throw newbies onto a spin pole and say, "Okay, now invert!" They spent 8 to 9 weeks on strong basics, followed by a smart 4-week transition period, and then moved to combinations. When students are given a progressive, safety-first education instead of firsthand frustration, they don’t quit. They stay, they progress, and they level up safely at their own pace. Whoop! Mage Flow Pole does this exact thing!!!
A Few Scientific Quirks (Because We Love a Side-Eye)
The "Where is the rest of the book?" Layout: The researchers put the data discussion right in the middle of the paper, which is an elite level of chaotic formatting for a science journal.
The Youth Bias: The participants were all between 21.5 and 32 years old. We love our 20-somethings, but real-world studios know that the 35+ crowd is where the real hormonal and fitness battles are fought! We would love to see how these phase angles hold up when life, careers, and decades of gravity are factored in.
The Mystery Fitness History: The study doesn't explicitly state the exclusion criteria. Were any of these "newbies" secret former Olympic gymnasts? We don't know. Surely not but they didn't say.
Quirks aside, this paper proves that pole fitness is an absolute powerhouse of a workout. It respects women's health, smashes the boredom roadblock, and builds undeniable physical strength—all in just 70 minutes a week. If you know our packs & memberships you might side-eye that 1 per week offering, but now ya get it..right? IT WORKS!
So the next time someone asks you why you hang upside down for fun, just smile and tell them you're busy optimizing your cellular phase angles. Science says so!
Haven't tried to change your vertical perspective yet?
That's okay, go get you some upside-down therapy!
Be sure and hop over to the offering page for a fast glance booking! Yep they are each listed with the next few days times offered. Just click to see the descriptions or go here to read about class offerings with a chart for what HOW it's gonna help your body personally: HOW TO PICK A MFP CLASS.
Its all right there in a chart! Go girl!
